Co-Lab Artistry

“Unleash Your Creativity, Express Your Most Authentic Self,
and Become the Artist You Always Dreamed of Becoming”

Composition by Alena Hennessy and Susan TuttleEver daydream about learning to paint? Or ever imagine creating elaborate mixed-media compositions on canvas?

If you have thought about it but failed to follow through, it is likely for one reason: Self-doubt.

We tend to let our self-doubt keep us from “risking” the uncharted waters of unfamiliar mediums … or from taking a chance and putting our most expressive work out there for the world to see.

That inner critic of ours can keep us from trying anything.

But here’s the thing: You CAN paint. (Though you do have to take up a brush and spend some time with it.) And you CAN create incredible artistic photos and layer them into stunning mixed media compositions. (Though you are going to have to learn to think of photography in a whole new way.)

But mostly it’s just a matter of getting past your uncertainties and self-doubt … immersing yourself in some technique … and simply taking those first steps. Which will embolden you to take the next. And then the next.

colab

And when you think about it, it is an incredibly exciting time to be an artist. With the right training to get you started, it is easier than ever to be bold.

What’s more, with all the exciting advances in digital and mobile photography, you can now readily combine rich photo artistry with an extravagant array of paints, inks, markers, and more … moving from photography to paint and canvas and back to photo art again.

And it is precisely this that you will find here.

In this captivating new collaborative course, Susan Tuttle and Alena Hennessy (acclaimed artists, authors of multiple top-selling books, and internationally respected instructors) will show you how to become the confident, creative, expressive artist you have long dreamed of becoming.

Mixed Media with Susan Tuttle and Alena Hennessy

Here’s what you are going to learn as you explore this course . . .

  • Alena and Susan will each train you first on how to approach your world as a visual artist, and then walk you through getting everything prepped and ready for the new artistic life ahead of you.
  • Alena will help you rid yourself of that bothersome inner critic currently keeping your artistry in check and preventing you from expressing your creative vision.
  • Susan will then take you through all of the essential training required to create pro-level images with nothing but your iPhone.

That gets you started. But then you will move on to learn even more about . . .

  • How to create rich mixed-media abstract backgrounds on which to then build your compositions.
  • How to employ line art, ink washes, and gesso in prepping imaginative backdrops.
  • How to turn photos into abstracts, create digital watercolors and combine textures, and layer in typography and design elements right on your smartphone or tablet.

inspired art training

And it is then that things get really exciting, because this is where Alena and Susan bring everything together and demonstrate a sweeping range of techniques and approaches you could use yourself in fashioning your own mixed-media compositions . . .

  • Alena leads off the first four projects, creating an initial piece which Susan then responds to with her photo artistry.
  • Susan then leads off the next four projects using iPhoneography as the starting point (exploring a variety of styles like landscape, still-life, and portraiture), then handing off to Alena who carries the pieces into the realm of paint and paper, pen, drawing media, and more.
  • And in many of these collaborations, the original artist then takes up the “final” piece and gives it one last imaginative twist, showing how you can always carry a piece further and find something new it has to share.

You will be able to enjoy all of that and more, including:

  • Artist interviews with Susan and Alena (which will inspire you even further).
  • Custom pro-quality backgrounds Susan and Alena designed to help you get off and running right away.
  • A gorgeous set of additional mixed-media backgrounds created by FoxeySquirrel.
  • Some great additional training from both artists, taking you through the steps involved in presenting your work online ad getting your work into exhibitions and galleries.
  • And even a class Flickr Group AND a private class Facebook Group, so you can share your work and get inspired by what everyone else is creating!

Now … here’s what you are NOT going to find in this course:

What you are not going to find is the kind of “painting” instruction you might have been taught in a more traditional class when you were growing up. Training of that kind sometimes encourages absolute realism as opposed to a freer creative expression — and almost by design can stop your creative flow or bring up your inner critic the whole time you are painting or drawing.

Mixed Media ArtistryHardly what you want to be.

The reality is, it can take YEARS of practice to paint something with anything approaching true photo-realistic technique. Years and years of effort. And even then, each of us has certain inherent limits to acquiring that kind of technical skill.

You can of course continue to improve technically, and you can work to achieve any level of technique your vision requires.

But that comes with time.

In the meantime, you needn’t worry about trying to paint like Rembrandt or Vermeer. (Though Cezanne, perhaps. Or Monet. These were expressive painters unconcerned with creating picture-perfect paintings through colossal effort. They were artists who found their expression through paint — however wild, however free.)

In the meantime, you should be HAVING FUN.

You should be expressing your creative vision and living the life of a true artist.

Similarly, this course isn’t going to teach you how to wield a DSLR like a pro. (Though Susan’s new book will.)

You aren’t going to learn how to think through f-stops and ISO settings and metering methods.

Instead, you are going to capture images of wonder all around you … and craft them into artistic compositions — or components of larger, richer, layered mixed-media canvases.

And you will learn to do this with the simplest and most common of photographic tools available today: your smartphone!

Here’s how you will know that this course is PERFECT for you . . .

it will not lead you astray

1st: If you want to live and breathe and move through your days as a REAL ARTIST (not in a frustrating forever state of “maybe, someday”).

2nd: If what matters to you most is HAVING FUN and EXPRESSING YOURSELF (not years of tedious technical practice).

3rd: If the idea of creating artistic photography with an iPhone or iPad excites you — and what excites you just as much (or more) is the idea of then combining that photo-artistry with a brilliant array of acrylic and watercolor paints, and various papers, markers, ink, wax, gesso … so you can end up with real canvases, real works of art …

Sound like you? And are you ready to finally become the artist you were meant to be?
Then you are SO in the right place right now.

Which is why . . .

If you would love to revel in the tactile delight of paint brush and pen and marker (and a sweeping array of other art materials) … and if you have a smartphone or tablet (perhaps an iPhone, iPad, or even an iPod Touch) and if you love creating great photographic art … then don’t hesitate:

Take up this challenge and start your new, more expressive artistic life today.

This is your chance to tap into ALL of your artistry, ALL your creativity.

It’s a grand adventure, and it is opening up before you.

Your artistic life will never be the same.

Lois Reynolds Mead
“I have been following Susan Tuttle since at least 2006. I have seen her continually grow as an artist, and watched her come out with one great book after another, and get published in different magazines. I absolutely love her work. And now she has this course that involves photos taken with your iPhone and magically turns your smart phone into a convenient place to manipulate or create masterpieces wherever you are. This is easily the most up to date, state-of-the-art, amazing, brilliant, out of this world approach to creating art I have ever seen.
Patti Koosed
“I discovered Susan through her incredible books on creating photographic art. When I saw what she was able to accomplish with nothing more than an iPhone, it knocked me flat. Her capabilities as an instructor are remarkable, and her sensibilities as an artist utterly captivating. Highly recommended!
Katie Fisher
“Your work with self portraits is brilliant and your course is awesome — instructionally sound, well designed, clear and easy to follow and chock full of tips, tricks and techniques of value to both the novice and the veteran iPhoneographer. If you’re looking to explore your creative spirit and build your repertoire of skills, this is a great place to start! In just the first couple of lessons I’ve learned new things that I will apply in the work I do. iPhone work has been a huge part of my photo repertoire since 2010 and it always amazes me how many different creative paths we have all taken with it. Congratulations to you on your recognition for your work and for creating this awesome course.

“I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you and your kindness. I love your classes because of your grace and spirit. You are a bright light in this world and I am blessed to have crossed paths with you.”
Lydia Kimble Wright
The best e-course I have ever taken.
Suki Kapinao
“Again thank you so much, not only just for connecting to the student but for everything that you have offered in your e-courses. I have been creating more then I have been in a long time and have a new sense of inspiration . . . I went to become a school teacher and since then I have found it tricky to balance art making and working, but I have a new sense of creativity now. What you are doing and how you are helping is beyond what I can express in words.
Michelle Langille
“The beauty of Alena’s classes is that they are about intention, not merely craft, so everything I wrote and painted and glued and glazed surprised me with my own history and direction. Just the fact of that surprise, knowing it’s still possible, still out there whenever I work, gives me lots of hope and determination to keep working. It’s a rare teacher who can make her students feel safe enough to conjure that kind of magic in their own lives.
Marta Drew
“Just a little note as it passes midnight here in Adelaide, South Australia. I’ve just spent the past evening watching the first four of your fundamentals videos. So calming and instructive (as always). And while I’m here thank you and Susan for deciding to make this course life-long access. It removes so much pressure knowing I can schedule this in when it works for me (despite wanting to gobble it up all at once, one has a job to go to!).”
Lyn Metcalf
“I’ve taken Susan’s iPhoneography self-portrait course and A Year of Painting with Alena, and I’m over-the-moon excited to do a mash-up!!!”
Lara Cornell
“I am over the moon excited about a new class I’m enrolled in, that combines mixed media with iPhoneography! CoLab Artistry with Susan Tuttle and Alena Hennessy, both masters of their art! I think it’s going to be an epic chance to really stretch my artistry!”
Jana Holden
“I signed up this morning and after going out to take some Autumn photos, I planted myself in front of the computer to start going through the Fundamental’s part of the course. Let me say that you and Alena have charmed me………the music, your voices, and the creativity from both of you is exactly what I needed to kick-start my lazy ‘muse’. Although I take photos a LOT, my painting/mixed media has been on ‘hold’ for a few months……this course is just the perfect fit.”
Jan DeBellis
“This course is amazing!”
Jana Holden
“This course is so much fun! Thank you, thank you Alena Hennessy and Susan Tuttle! Anybody on the edge about joining the fun should just surrender and dive in!”
